Wikibase is an extremely flexible software. We can create practically any form of statements on any sort of objects. There are, actually, no "sorts" of objects, just objects of knowledge under Q-Numbers (called "items"). They win qualities through the various statements we make on them. With our statements we state "properties" of the objects.

The open and versatile arrangements allows us to set "labels" and "descriptions" in various languages on both our Q-numbers of items and our P-numbers of properties.

While we can create any statement for any item we should accumulate statements in a wider agreement so that searches get conclusive answers for the whole field of items which we are handling — like our several thousand lodges. This page is there to collect wider agreements on how we make certain statements in the complex sphere of Freemasonry. It is at the same time the page to visit in order to get an idea of searches one can run on our Masonic data.

Lodges

Basic Data

  • "Continuation of" Property:P6 to state a precursor
  • "Continued by" Property:P7 to state a successor
  • "Merger with" Property:P436 to state state other lodges that went into a merger
  • "Includes" Property:P9 if a union like United 5 Lodges of Hamburg needs to be specified

Changing names

  • Use the "alias" function in the header to refer directly to the different names like "Ernst zum Compass" and useful abbreviations
  • "name history" Property:P34 to give a history with dates and sources of name changes

Integration

  • "Mother Lodge" Property:P336 to state the Lodge that founded a particular Lodge. Add qualifiers
  • "Begin date" Property:P49 to state the beginning of the relationship
  • "Specific position" Property:P166 to state that a lodge was acting here as deputy lodge/"Deputationsloge"
  • "Patent granted by Property:P332 to state the Lodge that granted the patent. Add qualifiers
  • "date" Property:P106 to state the date the patent was granted
  • "primary source" to name the Item of the document
  • "Grand Lodge affiliation" Property:P430 to state the Grand Lodge a particular lodge has chosen as the roof organisation
  • "Member of" Property:P91 to state organisational memberships

It is possible to state "Daughter Lodges" with the Property:P335 but the statements will create a redundancy (and more work to keep changing statements in line) as we already mention the "mother lodge" on the daughter's item.

Members

It is possible to state members on the lodge item with Property:P293, but not recommendable since some organisations will have thousands of members, and since it will also be hard work to make sure that we have the same information on the person's side and on the lodge's side. Give the membership information preferably in the item of the particular member.

State on the lodge's side:

  • "founded by" Property:P268 to state the founder(s) of the lodge
  • "founding members" Property:P338 to state the circle of those who began the congregation
  • "In leading positions" Property:P14 to state higher functionaries person by person. Qualify their roles with:
  • "Specific position" Property:P166 to state the specific role like "worshipful master", "secretary" etc.
  • "Begin date" Property:P49 to state the date when the person came into this position
  • "End date" Property:P50 to state when the office terminated
  • "Documented list of members" Property:P327 to state documents and publications that offer lists of members
  • "FactGrid list of members" Property:P320 to set the link of a FactGrid search that creates a list of members

  • "End date" Property:P50 to state when a system became obsolete
  • "Organisational context" Property:P267 state "Freemasonry" Item:Q10678 if you want the system to be listed under Masonic systems, state more specific contexts as you feel fit
  • "Institution signing responsible" Property:P66 if there is a particular organisation controlling the system

  • "Documentation" Property:P352 to reference the authoritative contemporary documentation of a Masonic system.
  • "Preceding in stemma" Property:P233 if you want to refer to genetic precursors. Qualify with
  • "Connection in stemma" Property:P233 how the system is related to precursors. This will require Q-Numbers for specific genetic relationships such as variation, expansion...
