New translation following Alexander Pope's recommendation in his Rape of the Locke which offered a prefix mentioning the Rosicrucians and Pierre Bayle's article on them in his Dictionnaire Historique. The "Discourses" following with the "History" take place between the narrator and Count de Gabalis and circle around the four species of pure beings the Sylps (aur), Nymphs (water), Gnomes (Earth) and Salamanders (fire) and their respective roles in the divine creation in general and the possibilities to mix with them sexually in particular. Peculiar ironic presentation. The narrator often handles the Count with greatest respect and anxiety, yet also with cleverness in monouvering the vain and sensitive counterpart through these conversations. (English)
