1788 wurde das Bistum Laibach zum Erzbistum erhoben. 1807 hob Pius VII. die Kirchenprovinz Laibach auf, das Bistum wurde wieder direkt dem Hl. Stuhl unterstellt. 1918 in Ljubljana umbenannt, wurde das Bistum 1961 erneut zum Erzbistum erhoben.
