Aims

The FactGrid project of "A Vocabulary for Religious Studies" aims at getting a step beyond present vocabularies such as the Inist-CNRS "History and Sciences of Religions Vocabulary" (1972–2018)

The vocabulary should:

  • provide persistent identifiers (the FactGrid Q-numbers should serve as such) without an attempt to establish a new standard — it is more important to note the various identifiers that are available in different projects, library consortia, authority files and in Wikidata, so that matchings can be performed without substantial losses of precision.
  • allow statistics with the help of classificatory systems that order the broader variety of terms documents are using
  • explain and define terms, to give users an understanding of terms they find in documents
  • reference and date terms with links to sources
  • geo-locate geographical information
  • interconnect terms with links between practices, concepts, people, organisations, and events

The FactGrid Vocabulary for Religious Studies will not be complete and conclusive in the foreseeable futur. It is here on FactGrid an attempt to organise the production and the interconnection of terms in the field and to win projects outside for joint efforts to create useful open vocabulary on a CC0-license that projects can expand wherever they arise.
