Die Mönche sollten in eigenen Häusern oder Zellen alleine leben und kamen nur zu bestimmten Gebetszeiten und zu Sonn- und Feiertagen in der Gemeinschaft zusammen. Im 12. Jahrhundert breitete sich der Kartäuserorden vor allem in Frankreich aus, dann auch in den europäischen Nachbarländern.
