Tieman is supposed to have been a member of the Illuminati (see Schüttler, Bodes Reise, introduction. Antoine Favre thinks he was not a member (De Londres à Saint-Pétersbourg: Carl Friedrich Tieman, etc, esp. p. 222). In Autumn 1785 Tieman travelled from France to Russia and stayed in Germany for a while. As a child, he lived in Dannigkow. His half-brother Johann Christoph was a pastor there.
but: Thieme is said to have been Worshipful Master of the Lodge in Zerbst, and that's not exactly a position for a traveller. We need to check the membership lists.
