<translate> WikiProject Books</translate>

Wikidata-books-task-force-logo.svg

<translate> The aim of the WikiProject Books is:

  • to define a set of properties that can be used both by Template:Ll, Commons books templates, and Template:Ll.
  • to map and import all relevant data that currently is spread in Commons, Wikipedia, and Wikisource.
  • establish methods to interact with this data from different projects</translate>

Bibliographic properties

We used the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) model (a widely used and famous conceptual framework in library science) to divide the Book properties in 2 sets. The FRBR model underlines the fact that you can view a book in 4 different ways, or levels: as a work, as an expression, a manifestation or an item.

Within Wikimedia projects, we don't need all 4 of them: for example, when Wikipedia has an article about a book, it is often in the "work" view (i.e. the Bible, Pinocchio, Hamlet are regarded as "creative works", which have been embodied in several translation and editions and different media).

On Wikisource, a particular edition (sometimes, we have more than one) is used for a book. As we have different Wikisources, we thus have also translations. </translate>

<translate> Since it blurries these differences, the item book (<tvar name="1">Q571</tvar>) should be avoided - see the item's discussion page.</translate>

<translate> Not to complicate too much, we didn't use the FRBR terms "expression" or "manifestation", as the boundary between the definitions is not easy to grasp. So we collapsed those two FRBR layers in one (BIBFRAME Instance): "edition" (other conceptual frameworks similar to FRBR, like Bibframe, also collapse those two layers). Thus a two-layer framework, consisting of work and edition, has been used for creating Book properties in Wikidata.

Work item properties

These properties are for the first item that represents a book (FRBR work level). They are mainly meant to be used for items linked to Wikipedia pages.

Works should be instances of Q47461344 or one of its subclasses. </translate>

Edition item properties

These properties are for the item that represents the edition of a book (FRBR expression/manifestation level). They are mainly for editions of books used as sources. They are mainly meant to be used for items linked to Wikisource editions.

Note that each edition of a book should have a separate Wikidata item. If the content (foreword, afterword, illustration), pagination (page number), publisher, or publication place changes, a new item should be created for that edition. If a book is an identical reprint of a previous edition (no change in the mentioned properties), it does not need a new item.

Editions should be instances of Q3331189 or one of its subclasses. </translate>

Exemplar properties

There are a number of wikipedia articles which deal with a single copy of a book which has become notable for some reason. See Q1816474 and the bibles listed in Q8546779. These will need different properties from those used for a literary work.

Where there is only one copy of a literary work then the wikidata page may need both sets of properties.</translate>

<translate> See Wikidata:WikiProject Visual arts/Item structure for a more properties that may be applicable.

Manuscript properties

Manuscripts are single copies of literary works, so a manuscript is not the same as a literary work. All manuscript items need P31 with one of Q87167, Q48498, Q213924, Q2217259, Q274076, Q30103158. Please specify the writing material for P186: Q125576, Q11472, Q286, Q226697, Q1463658, Q378274.</translate> <translate> The person who writes out the manuscript is indicated with P6819: this is often different from the author of the literary work P50. If a different person made the illustrations, they are the P110. The time when the manuscript was completed is P571. If the manuscript has (at least some of) the text of a specific literary work (or multiple works), use P1574. If the text is of a type such as Q1754581, Q690851, Q284465, Q727715, or Q1991869, put that as P136. Choose a location for P276 that has the best possible precision, otherwise use the city where P195 is located. If there is an online catalogue record for the manuscript, put the link as P973. If the entire manuscript is available online, put that link as P953.</translate> Template:List of properties/Header Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Row Template:List of properties/Footer
