Die drei Kisten sind so sorgsam wie möglich eingewickelt, in von Matten bedecktes Stroh. Sie tragen auf den Matten die Prägung: <u>H.v.S N. I.II. III. alte Bücher</u>
Die Kisten N. I und II. sind auf den Brettern mit H.v.S.G. bezeichnet und jede an drei verschiedenen Stellen mit meinem gewöhnlichen Siegel besiegelt.
Die Kiste N. II ist an vier verschiedenen Orten mit demselben Siegel besiegelt. Hinzugefügt ist ein Paket mit Sachen, die erst nach der Schließung der Kiste N. III gefunden wurden. Dieses Paket hat eine doppelte Verpackung aus Papier, von denen jede mit dem genannten Siegel verschlossen ist. Die äußere Abdeckung in blauem Papier trägt nur die Bezeichnung <u>N. IV.</u>

Commentary

This is the letter that went to Sweden to serve as a further declaration of the three cabinets Gotha was sending to the archive of Sweden's Grand Lodge in 1804. Ernest II had bought Bode's Illuminati archive already in March 1788 (so the implication of the diaries) in order to prevent Bode from publishing the papers. The materials remained, however, in Bode's possession as he wanted to bring some more order into them in the upcoming years. We know, Bode noted this in his diary, that he started with this work in March 1788 but we cannot tell whether he took much more than a first effort.

At Bode's death on Dezember 13, 1794 Gotha was to inherit far more than his Illuminati archive. Christian Gottlob von Voigt Item:Q1271 signed three inventories: two on December 22, 1793 of his Masonic and Illuminati manuscript collections respectively, and a third one on January 13, 1794 of his library of Masonic, Rosicrucian, Jesuit, an Magical books.

The following letter is interesting as it explains how this compound was enlarged after the death of Ernest II at whose last will the entire collection was designed to leave Gotha for a permanent archival holding at the Grand Lodge in Stockholm.

The cabinet No. III. is sealed in four different places with the same stamp. There is added a package containing some things that were not found until after the closure of Caise N.III. This package has a double paper cover, each of which is closed with the said stamp. The outer cover of blue paper bears only the N.IV. mark.
